In May 2015, the Victorian Government committed to contribute $40.7 million toward a new diamond interchange connecting O’Herns Road to the Hume Freeway in Epping and the duplication of 1.4km of O’Herns Road, east of the interchange. The balance of this funding is to be sought from the Federal Government.

The road network deficiencies in the Epping area have been the subject of ongoing community feedback and advocacy by the Whittlesea City Council. There are gaps in network connectivity, significant congestion and restricted accessibility presenting safety risks to the community during emergencies.

To kick start planning for the upgrade, VicRoads was successful in seeking the early release of $200,000 from the committed $40.7 million. This will enable planning for the upgrade which will include planning and preconstruction work, including impact assessments, environmental and cultural heritage surveys and urban design.
